The Williams Residence: An Efficient In-Law Suite and ADU Addition
A home’s character and beauty should not take a back seat to design efficiency or special requirements when planning an addition or remodel. In fact this is often the only time we have the opportunity to add character, beautify a home, or address past mistakes in scale or porpotion.
The owners of this home wanted to create a space dedicated to their mother; a space where she could feel comfortable and truly call her own. Our goal was to develop a cozy retreat designed for an aging family member while not degrading the character of the home. If anything we wanted to take this time to adding more charm and character to the home’s existing style. After exploring options of how to add an in-law suite (or accessory dwelling unit) to the existing home and property, the home owners settled on converting the existing garage into an apartment suite for their mother in-law. Adding a new garage onto the home solved the issue of loosing garage space, but it made developing the in-law suite tricky. By tying in existing architectural features helps we helped blend this new addition while developing charm that the right side of the home originally lacked.
