Champion Lakes Golf Course Porch Addition

Building on a truly historic legacy, and developing resort style amenities for all to enjoy.

Located just outside of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, Champion Lakes Golf Course approached me to help design a rear porch and patio addition for the clubhouse of their golf course. This new rear addition brings added character to the clubhouse building which is currently a simple red brick structure. With the addition of the timber frame roof atop the stone foundations and columns of the porch we tie the building in with other timber frame structures already on the course and begin to create an architectural language that is uniquely “Champion Lakes.” The legacy of Champion Lakes is that of Dick Groat, and his Pittsburgh Pirates teammate, Jerry Lynch. The two converted what was an apple orchard into what we now know as Champion Lakes. In keeping with the architectural heritage of the Laurel Highlands the base of this porch is constructed with a field stone, but to also pay homage to the athletic roots of the founders we have proposed the use of “Duke Stone” to create a solid base for this addition both physically and metaphorically. Duke Stone was chosen because of its unique coloring, and Mr. Groat’s legacy as a basketball player for Duke University, where he was a two time all-American and the first player to have is jersey retired (#10) by the program. The beauty of this addition not only lies in its architecture, but in the views of the golf course, and the rolling Laurel Highland mountains it captures. An inviting space for guests to relax before or after a round of golf we are aiming to create a resort style experience for guests to enjoy when they visit. Two stories of social and dining spaces along with a remodel of the first floor interior spaces to create a larger pro shop and causal dining room help to tie this vision together.
