David Stumpf Architecture, LLC Celebrates First Year in Business!

This month, August of 2021, David Stumpf Architecture, LLC is celebrating the firm's first full year in business!  Headquartered in Penn Hills, and practicing as far away as Dallas and San Antonio, the architecture practice focuses on high quality delivery of innovative building solutions for its clients.

Architect David Stumpf stands in front of one of his recently completed projects, Griff’s Italian Ice, located in Export, PA.

A graduate of Penn Trafford High School (2007) David went on to study architecture at both Kent State University (B.A. 2011) where he received his undergraduate degree in architectural design and construction management, and the University of Texas at San Antonio (M.Arch 2015) where he received his Master of Architecture degree.  David began a small design practice shortly after his graduation from Kent State working on building design improvements at Champion Lakes Golf Course in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.  When he left for Texas in 2012 bound for the University of Texas at San Antonio, David mothballed his small design practice in pursuit of his graduate education.

In 2015 after completing his graduate education David returned to Pittsburgh having accepted a job as a Graduate Architect with the firm Margittai Architects located in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood.  It was there that he honed his skill as an architect working on modern homes for developers within the city limits, boutique design solutions for local business owners, and historic preservation work such as the restoration of the Century Inn in Scenery Hill, PA after the tragic fire there in 2015.  It was here that David completed his required two year architectural internship and his six board examinations to become a licensed architect, and decided that he would eventually like to go into business for himself. Before he was to strike out on his own, he felt he needed experience working on larger projects.  To do that, he would need to leave Pittsburgh once again bound this time for a job as a Staff Architect for the large multifamily and high-rise firm of WDG in Dallas.  In 2017 very few large projects were being built in the Pittsburgh region, and those that were, were being designed by large firms from New York, D.C., and other large metropolitan areas.  It seemed that local developers weren’t giving local architects a chance to shape their own city.

After spending several years in Dallas working on multi-family projects, office developments, and high-rise/skyscraper projects for large national developers such as Crescent Communities, David was again beginning to feel the itch to strike out on his own and deliver a more hands on and customer centric architectural experience for his clients.  Spurred on by the pandemic of 2020, changes to the local economy in Dallas, and his desire to be closer to family, David decided to open his own architectural practice, and decided that his hometown would be the best place to do just that.  While some may have found it foolhardy to go into business for yourself in the midst of an unsure time such as a global pandemic David leapt in head first, and has not looked back since.  As any business owner can attest to, this past year was a difficult one for small businesses, and it was a very hard time to start a business.  However, David has been able to find success helping other small business owners chase their dreams, and local families to design and build the homes they have always dreamed of owning.  Setting up shop on the east side of the city in Penn Hills, his practice is one of less than a handful of architects that are located in and serve the businesses in Pittsburgh’s eastern communities having several commercial projects in East McKeesport, Export, Ligonier and Wilmerding.  He is also the only residential architect on the east side of the city that now lives and practices in the region in which he was raised.  Having designed several homes in Murrysville for client’s such as Suncrest Homes, and Latrobe for local families that come to him directly for architectural services David is helping to design and shape a better world and community for the residents of Pittsburgh’s eastern communities.

David’s first project when he began his architectural practice this past year was a small commercial building located in Export along the Westmoreland Heritage Trail and across from the Helltown Brewery.  Many of the readers of this publication may be familiar with that building if they frequent the walking/biking trail, and will be thrilled to hear that David has finished the design for the building’s new tenant Griff’s Italian Ice, an Italian ice and ice cream shop and welcomed trailside addition.  Having recently submitted for their building permit, and now awaiting approvals from Murrysville’s building department David is excited that the business owner Sean Griffith has tentatively scheduled the opening for the fall of 2021.
